Planting a Seed: Could I Build a Blog Platform? 🌱

Lately, I’ve been thinking about building a simple blogging platform, something like Bearblog. I even checked out a few alternatives to see what’s out there:

  1. lmno.lol β€” Pretty good, but still in the early stages
  2. fika.bar β€” Tried logging in but got stuck with an “Error loading fika.” message πŸ˜•
  3. rentry.co β€” Just a markdown editor, nothing more

There are a few others, but honestly, none of them really hit the mark for me. They’re okay, but not great.

As someone who used to develop Android apps and websites, I want to dive back into coding with a fresh project. These days, I work full-time in cybersecurity and cloud, so I figured building something like this would be a good challenge πŸ’ͺ and a perfect way to learn by doing. Hosting it on the cloud ☁️ will definitely bring some interesting hurdles and tackling those will help me improve my understanding of both product development and infrastructure.

I’m a fan of keeping things simple. Vanilla HTML and CSS with no frameworks, just the classic approach 🎨. For the backend, I’m thinking Python with Django might be a solid fit. It’s been a while since I coded seriously, so this will be a nice way to refresh my skills and build something meaningful.

I really enjoy small tools and projects like these because they’re fun and manageable. At the same time, I don’t want to get stuck maintaining a single product forever. My goal is to keep moving, exploring new ideas, and starting lean. Once the project reaches a certain point, I’d rather focus on infrastructure challenges like scaling, caching, and load balancing βš™οΈ and leave the day-to-day development to someone else.

I’ve got a list of other small projects I want to try out as well:

  • A Pomodoro clock ⏲️
  • A bookmark management tool πŸ”–
  • A simple counter app πŸ”’

and more…

For the frontend, I’ve leveraged v0.dev before and it did an amazing job, so I might lean on it again.

As I plan this platform, I’m also curious about how it might fit into the broader ecosystem of decentralized and privacy-focused tools sometimes called the Fediverse 🌐. While this project won’t start fully federated, exploring ideas around interoperability and user control is something I want to keep in mind as it grows.

If you’re passionate about open, decentralized platforms or the Fediverse in general, I’d love to hear your thoughts!

So, that’s where I’m at right now. Let’s see where this idea takes me.

If you’re interested in building something similar or just want to chat about these ideas, feel free to drop a comment below. I’d love to connect with folks around the world who share the same vibe.
